A 4 minute video sharing my experience of journeying with cancer

Thriving with Stage 4 Cancer!

Yes, it’s possible to thrive with cancer!

When I continue to get stellar scans on my healthy journey, I get a plethora of people reaching out to me asking what I do for my own self care. To read my full story, please check out my Amazon bestseller memoir, which is available in print version on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and on Audible as an audio book, ‘Grace, Grit & Gratitude: A Cancer Thriver’s Journey from Hospice to Full Recovery with the Healing Power of Horses’. If you don’t know my story, please watch this video on YouTube.

I was diagnosed with stage 3 estrogen positive breast cancer in September 2016. In the winter of 2019, I came very close to death as the cancer had spread throughout my body to my lungs, liver, bones & adrenal glands. When I was referred to Hospice during that time period, I decided embraced an integrative approach of healing cancer in order to save my life.

My healing protocol is based on YEARS of research, through reading books, talking to fellow cancer journeyers, receiving advice from practitioners and much more. In the many years of journeying with late stage cancer, I have tried practically everything! With so many choices and pressure from doctors, family and friends, it can be overwhelming to know what to do. Therefore, it’s important to research thoroughly.  I encourage everyone on a cancer journey to make their own empowered choice for their individual path of healing.

Mind Medicine

While it is important to fill your body with healthy nutrients and medicine to heal cancer, maintaining an optimistic attitude is equally critical. It is challenging to have a serious cancer diagnosis, the mind can latch on and create drama! It is far easier to fall into a negative thought pattern than to rise to a positive frame of mind. My goal is to give voice to the fears and doubts that arise and then let release them!  These are the key mental patterns I keep focused on:

  • Attitude of gratitude: Being grateful

  • Deep faith that this adversity is present for my growth and ultimately to help others

  • Visualizations & affirmations: Seeing myself healthy, for example “I am healthy, I am healing”

  • Reducing stress: I have a choice in every moment how to orient my mind

  • Support: Asking for help. Yes, it is difficult to ask for help! Having loving people around you that you can lean on is crucial for healing. We are not meant to be alone.

  • I truly believe that SELF LOVE/ALOHA MA is the key to healing! I talk about the concept of slef love & Aloha Mā in my book.

  • When I stumble onto challenging moments, I get therapeutic & emotional support. It is essentially important to release emotions for the cycle of healing to continue! I have a team of healers I reach out to. Most notably, I would like to mention my dear friend and thriver sister Bethany Webb, who wrote the book ‘My Guru Cancer’. She utilizes ‘The Work of Byron Katie’ in private coaching sessions and group classes. This helps me break down challenging thoughts.

Body Medicine

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a one-size fit all answer to healing cancer! This is the protocol I have chosen that works for me specific to what my body needs. Everyone’s diagnosis and healing protocol are different.

Diet:

I eat gluten free, healthy, organic food. I DO NOT eat sugar as sugar feeds cancer. For about a year I was on a strict Ketogenic diet, until recently. I do plan to get back on it.

Spirit Medicine

As I share in my book, I do believe that the healing power of my horses assist me greatly on my healing journey. I am grateful for every furry friend I am fortunate to spend time with. Comanche, the mustang, Blue, the paint horse, Xaria, the fun and frenetic Australian Shepherd dog and my precious cats: Kismet, Rae & Leia all help me equalize and balance my energy on a daily basis.

I also am fortunate to live a lifestyle close to the Earth in an off the grid yurt in Kaua’i, Hawaii. The mana of the island where my father’s side of the family (Portuguese ancestry) deeply feeds me. I love the simplicity of my life and living with my beloved animals!

A Bit more

As I am a Life-Coach and Equine Facilitated Learning instructor (I work with people with horses), I offer personalized coaching and support for those on the cancer healing journey, but know that I do not offer medical advice as I am not a doctor.
